Pack Testing: Choosing the Right Methodology for Your Brand

Why One Size Never Fits All in Pack Testing

When brands come to us about pack testing, the conversation rarely starts with methodology. It starts with a problem: a new pack design that needs validating, a range review coming up fast, a global rollout that needs consistent benchmarks across markets. The objective is always specific. The budget and timeline are always real.

That’s why Explorer isn’t a menu you order from. It’s a conversation we have with you.

It Starts With What You’re Actually Trying to Answer

Every pack testing engagement begins in the same place: your objectives. What decision are you trying to make? What do you already know, and what’s still unclear? Who needs to be convinced, and by when? Only once we understand that do we start thinking about how to answer it.

From there, we build a program around you, drawing on a range of solutions that span in-person and online, physical and virtual, broad and targeted.

The Solutions

1. In-Person With Real Product

Some questions can only be answered by putting the real thing in front of real people. When you’re assessing a material change, comparing glass versus plastic, evaluating how a pack feels in hand, or understanding how weight impacts perception on shelf, there’s no substitute for the physical product in a real retail environment. Our in-person solution with real product is built for exactly that kind of tactical, sensory assessment, where the nuance of the physical experience is central to the decision.

2. In-Person Virtual Reality

Understanding how your pack performs on shelf is one thing. Understanding how your brand shows up across an entire store is another. Our virtual reality solution allows us to replicate a total store environment, something no physical facility can do at the scale of a Walmart or a Kroger. That means we can track footfall throughout the store, assess whether shoppers are noticing displays, endcaps, multi-aisle placements, or department shops, and understand the full path to purchase in a way that shelf-only testing simply can’t capture. For brands making big in-store investment decisions, this is where the real depth lives.

3. Online Shelf Testing: 2D and 3D

When you need scale, speed, and cost efficiency without compromising on rigor, online shelf testing is the answer. We can replicate shelf fixtures up to 24 feet, reaching large samples faster and at a lower cost than any in-person equivalent.

Within online shelf testing, you have two options. Our 2D solution is the most widely used and is ideal when the front-facing shelf presence is what you’re evaluating. If your pack design also has meaningful back-of-pack or side-of-pack elements that shoppers engage with, our 3D solution lets you assess all sides of the pack in context, giving you a fuller picture of how the design works as a whole.

4. Online With No Shelf

Sometimes the shelf itself is the obstacle. When a fixture is too complex to replicate, when you’re benchmarking across multiple global markets, or when you need a fast and clean competitive read, our no-shelf online option removes that barrier entirely. It still includes a full competitive evaluation, so you’re never assessing your pack in isolation, but it strips away the complexity and cost that a full shelf build brings with it. It’s our fastest turnaround and lowest cost solution, and for many briefs, it’s exactly the right call.

Budget and Timelines Are Part of the Brief

We’re not going to pretend those don’t exist. The best methodology in the world doesn’t serve your business if it blows the budget or lands after the decision has already been made.

So when we build out an Explorer program, we’re thinking about how to maximize what you get from every dollar spent, how to sequence touchpoints with shoppers in a way that builds the richest picture possible within your constraints, and where the tradeoffs are worth making.

That might mean starting with a fast, cost-efficient online solution to get a directional read, then going deeper with an in-person or virtual reality approach for the final decision. Or it might mean a single focused methodology that hits exactly what you need.

We Figure It Out Together

Pack testing shouldn’t feel like filling out a form and waiting for a report to land in your inbox. That’s not partnership, that’s a vending machine.

We know the market is full of solutions promising fast answers. Automated platforms, AI-generated insights, tools that let you self-serve your way to a result in 48 hours. And for some things, that’s fine. But when the decision matters, when there’s real budget behind a pack change, a range review, or a global rollout, fast and automated isn’t always the same as right.

Explorer is different. You get a team that sits alongside you from the very first conversation, asking the questions that get to the heart of what you actually need, being straight with you about what will and won’t work within your budget and timeline, and building something that’s genuinely designed around your objectives.

Nothing we do is a black box. You’ll know what we’re doing, why we’re doing it, and what it means for your business. And because we’re not wedded to any single methodology, we’ll always point you toward the approach that serves your brief best, even if that’s not the most expensive one on the table.

Because at the end of the day, the most sophisticated algorithm in the world can’t replace a team that understands your category, your shoppers, and the commercial reality you’re operating in. That’s human insight. And human insight is what’s next.

So if you’ve got a pack decision to make and you’re not sure where to start, start with us. Bring us the problem, the budget, the deadline, and the pressure you’re under. We’ll work with you to figure out the rest.

That’s what Explorer is here for.
